Label printing spans material demand, converting capacity, healthcare workflows, packaging applications and environmental targets. The figures below distinguish labelstock consumption from finished-label counts, company results from market totals, and observed outcomes from forecasts.

European Label Printing Scale and Long-Term Trends
FINAT’s European labelstock figures measure material demand rather than finished printed-label unit counts or printer shipments. Within that definition, the market reached 8.1 billion square meters in 2022, and consumption was 50% higher than in 2010.
| Measure | Period | Result |
|---|---|---|
| European self-adhesive labelstock consumption | 2022 | 8.1 billion square meters |
| Change in consumption | 2010–2022 | 50% higher |
| Change in consumption | 2022 vs. 2021 | 4.7% lower |
| Continental European average | 2022 | 9.2 square meters per capita |
Source: FINAT hosts successful European Label Forum 2023.
The 2022 decline was notable because FINAT described it as the first decline since 2010. The continental European average also fell from 9.5 square meters per capita in 2021 to 9.2 square meters in 2022, so the per-person measure tracks the broader contraction but is not the same as total consumption.
FINAT RADAR reported a sharper short-term contraction in the second quarter of 2023: European self-adhesive industry demand was 27% lower year over year. The same source reported positive year-over-year growth in the second quarter of 2024 after that decline, while its third-quarter 2024 update described demand as undergoing a measured recovery.

Label Printing Demand by Material, Format and Geography
Material mix is one way to understand how label printing demand changes without confusing substrate demand with printer output. Filmic roll labelstock held 28.2% of European labelstock demand in 2022, up from 19.5% in the mid-2000s.
| Labelstock measure | Period | European result |
|---|---|---|
| Filmic roll labelstock share | Mid-2000s | 19.5% |
| Filmic roll labelstock share | 2022 | 28.2% |
| Continental average consumption | 2022 | 9.2 square meters per capita |
Source: FINAT hosts successful European Label Forum 2023. The filmic share concerns labelstock demand, not all printed-label formats.
Country and regional differences were wide in 2022. The Netherlands, Ireland and Scandinavian countries recorded consumption above 15 square meters per capita, while Turkey, Russia, Romania and Ukraine recorded less than 5 square meters per capita.
These are country-group comparisons, and exact country values were not provided. Germany’s label demand was slower than expected in the third quarter of 2024 amid weaker manufacturing, according to FINAT RADAR, so regional recovery was uneven rather than uniform.

Label Printing Industry Revenue and Profitability Benchmarks
CCL’s reported figures offer a company benchmark, not a total label-printing market estimate. The CCL Segment includes label, tube, container, design and secure businesses, and its reported growth includes acquisitions and currency effects.
| CCL Segment measure | 2023 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Sales | C$4,104.7 million | C$4,502.6 million |
| Operating income | C$633.5 million | C$713.7 million |
| Return on sales | 15.4% | 15.9% |
| Capital spending | C$324.7 million | C$323.7 million |
Source: 2024 CCL Annual Report. Operating income and return on sales use CCL’s non-IFRS and company-defined presentations.
CCL Segment sales increased 9.7% in 2024. CCL attributed 5.6 percentage points to organic growth, 3.5 percentage points to acquisitions and 0.6 percentage points to foreign-currency translation; these contributions describe the company’s own bridge of reported growth.
Operating income increased 12.7% in 2024, while return on sales rose from 15.4% to 15.9%. Capital spending was nearly level in the two reported years, at C$323.7 million in 2024 versus C$324.7 million in 2023, and includes equipment and new plants across the segment.
CCL Label joint ventures reported C$141.7 million of sales at 100% in 2024, down 26.1% from the prior year. Their earnings at 100% were C$37.8 million, while CCL’s 50% share of those earnings was C$18.9 million; these measures should not be read as consolidated revenue.
Label Printing Growth by Region and End Market
End-market figures show where label-related businesses generate activity, but they also include adjacent formats and materials. CCL Food & Beverage sales exceeded C$1 billion in 2024; that end market includes sleeves, pouches and in-mould labels, not only printed labels.
Innovia, a specialty-film segment serving label, packaging and security applications, reported the following results:
- Sales increased from C$629.8 million in 2023 to C$706.4 million in 2024.
- Reported sales growth was 12.2% in 2024, while company-defined organic growth was 9.7%.
- Operating income increased 45.2% to C$66.2 million in 2024.
- Return on sales improved from 7.2% in 2023 to 9.4% in 2024.

The distinction between reported and organic growth matters when interpreting regional or end-market performance. A company segment can expand through acquisitions, currency translation or product lines adjacent to labels even when underlying label demand is moving differently.
Label Printing Equipment, Capacity and Operational Output
A Zebra customer case study illustrates how label printing can be measured at the organization level. Sanquin, a Netherlands blood and blood-plasma organization, prints 1.56 million labels annually for blood and blood-plasma supplies.
| Sanquin operating context | Case-study figure |
|---|---|
| Labels printed annually | 1.56 million |
| Patients supplied each year | More than 300,000 |
| Blood donors | Approximately 345,000 |
| Employees | 2,000 |
| Legacy printer resolution range | 200–600 dpi |
| Standardized new-printer resolution | 203 dpi |
| Reported uptime after deployment | 100% |
Source: Sanquin Success Story. The figures describe one healthcare organization and should not be generalized to the market.
Before deployment, Sanquin’s legacy label printers operated from 200 to 600 dpi. After testing, the organization standardized its new label printers at 203 dpi, and it reported 100% uptime after deploying Zebra ZT610 printers.
The case also states that Sanquin supplies blood to more than 300,000 patients each year. Those patient, donor and employee figures provide organizational context; they are not measures of label-user adoption or industry-wide productivity.
Label Printing Sustainability and Digital Adoption Data
Sustainability measures in label printing often describe a material transition or a corporate target rather than an observed adoption rate. Avery Dennison’s proposed pharmaceutical liner transition uses rPET30 with 30% post-consumer recycled content, and the company provides a 12-month validation period for customers.
Based on 2023 sales volumes and the January 2024 version of Avery Dennison’s Carbon Footprinting Tool, the company projected the following annual effects for the covered pharmaceutical-label applications:
- Approximately 532,000 kilograms of CO2 saved per year.
- Approximately 2,266,000 liters of water saved per year.
- A 12-month validation period for the pharmaceutical liner transition.

CCL’s wider corporate targets provide another forward-looking benchmark. From a 2022 base year, CCL committed to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions 50% by 2030, engage suppliers representing 85% of spend to set science-based targets by 2030, and reduce Scope 1, Scope 2 and selected Scope 3 emissions 90% by 2050.
