U.S. Direct Mail Statistics: Volume, Revenue and Weight

USPS Marketing Mail is a specific postal category, and the USPS financial series excludes Marketing Mail Parcels. Its reported revenue, pieces and weight provide separate views of the U.S. channel rather than a universal estimate of every direct-mail format.

Fiscal year Revenue (US$ millions) Pieces (millions) Weight (million pounds)
FY2024 15,373 57,506 4,270
FY2023 15,081 59,424 4,654
FY2022 15,996 67,092 5,428

The USPS Postal Facts decade table presents the corresponding volume series in rounded billions: 56.8 billion pieces in its latest year shown, 57.5 billion in the prior year, 59.4 billion in the preceding year, and 67.1 billion in the preceding year. These are rounded USPS-defined figures, so they should not be treated as a separate population from the annual-report series.

Canada Post Direct Mail Data and Household Letter-Mail Trends

Canada Post’s measures combine direct-marketing products with broader letter-mail and operational indicators. That distinction matters: letter mail is broader than advertising mail, while addresses delivered are not unique households or individual recipients.

Canada measure 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024
Letter-mail pieces per household 181 168 149 144 133 124 113

In 2024, Canada Post delivered to 17.609 million addresses and operated more than 21,800 delivery routes. It delivered almost 6.4 billion pieces of mail, parcels and messages, a scale measure that includes far more than direct mail.

Canada Post reported 2024 revenue of C$365 million for Personalized Mail and C$421 million for Neighbourhood Mail. The reported C$786 million Smartmail Marketing total is the sum of those two product lines, not a measure of all Canadian advertising mail.

Direct Mail Response-Rate and ROI Benchmarks

The ANA benchmark is survey-based and reports results for surveyed direct marketers. Its house-list comparison is useful as a matched benchmark, but it is not an audited average for every direct-mail campaign.

Channel or campaign context Reported ROI Period and population
Direct mail to house lists 161% 2023 ANA benchmark survey
Email to house lists 44% 2023 ANA benchmark survey
Branded paid search 38% 2023 ANA benchmark survey

The same ANA usage chart found direct mail in 80% of mixed B2B/B2C campaigns, 64% of mostly or entirely B2C campaigns, and 35% of mostly or entirely B2B campaigns. These percentages describe campaign-use prevalence among respondents, not market share or the share of all businesses using mail.

Consumer Engagement and Cross-Channel Direct Mail Statistics

Lob and Comperemedia’s 2024 consumer report surveyed 2,000 consumers aged 18 and older. Several findings are conditional: the website and online-search figures apply only to consumers who said they had taken action from direct mail.

  • 65% were likely to engage with mail from a brand with which they already had a relationship.
  • 51% often or sometimes shared direct mail with friends or family; the report combines those self-reported frequency categories.
  • 63% were more likely to engage with personalized direct mail.
  • Among consumers who had acted on direct mail, 55% checked the brand’s website and 42% searched for the product online.

USPS also publishes an Informed Delivery calculator with benchmarks for integrated mail campaigns. Accessed October 3, 2026, it uses a 5.1% response-rate benchmark and gives promotional estimates of 13% more reach, 39% more attention, 37% more response, and 20% more conversions compared with single-channel mail; these are calculator estimates, not universal observed averages.

Direct Mail Adoption, Investment and Campaign Measurement

Lob’s 2024 marketing study surveyed 250 marketing professionals at North American companies with more than 1,000 employees. These figures describe marketer perceptions and self-reported plans rather than audited spending or independently measured campaign performance.

  • 84% said direct mail delivered the highest ROI of any channel they used in 2024.
  • The share reporting direct mail as the highest-ROI channel was 67% in 2022 and 74% in 2023.
  • 82% said they were increasing direct-mail spend in 2024.
  • The share reporting increased spend was 58% in 2023 and 82% in 2024; this is a comparison of reported survey percentages, not a spending-growth rate.
  • 97% said they were satisfied with their data for executing direct-mail campaigns.
  • 68% conducted business through both online and physical locations.
  • Most surveyed marketers reported annual mail volumes in the range of 100,000 to 100 million pieces; this is a reported band, not a mean or median.
  • 84% said direct mail delivered the best response rate, while 85% said it delivered the best conversion rate; the latter is retained as stated in the press release, which contains a duplicated conversion-rate statement.

Direct Mail Experiments and Response-Lift Evidence

Experimental results are highly context-specific. A mail-survey response rate, a public-benefit program inquiry rate and a commercial advertising response rate measure different outcomes and should not be combined into one benchmark.

A randomized mail survey of 1,267 private-practice dentists in Iowa recorded an overall response rate of 43%. The $2 incentive arm returned 48%, compared with 40% for the no-incentive control arm; these are randomized mail-survey results, not commercial direct-mail benchmarks.

A regional low-income utility-assistance field experiment observed a 1.5% average response rate to direct mail. In that campaign, black-and-white postcards cost an average of $31.25 per respondent, including production, postage and mailing service; the cost is specific to that public-benefit outreach setting.
